Prof. Dr. Philipp Berens is a Full Professor of Data Science for Vision Research at the Institute of Ophthalmic Research and the Departement of Computer Science of the University of Tübingen. With a training in bioinformatics and philosophy, he obtained a PhD degree from the International Max Planck Research School for Neural and Behavioral Sciences in Tübingen for work performed at the Max Planck Institute of Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen, and Baylor College of Medicine, in Houston, USA. In his work, he strives to make machine learning algorithms useful for understanding the retina. In particular, he interested in developing tools for a multimodal understanding of cell types, and improving diagnostics in ophthalmology.
